Odds are this holiday season you’ll find yourself with an invite to an event that requires you to bring something to share…and no time to whip up anything homemade. Well, don’t despair my dark hearted little darlings…this scary fast technique will have you turning a store-bought pumpkin pie into a treat worthy of Jack Skellington himself!
A few months ago I stumbled across this video from Youtube genius, Koalipops. In it, he shows you how, with just the addition of some candy melts, you can transform a store bought pumpkin pie into a disgustingly delicious and spooky masterpiece.
Of course, I had to give it a try and it worked so well, I’m passing his wisdom onto you all.
GATHER YOUR INGREDIENTS
To make your own scary fast Jack O’Lantern pie, you will need:
- 1 store-bought pumpkin pie
- Black candy melts
- Orange candy melts
- Yellow candy melts
You’ll also need
- Wax paper
- scissors
- Jack O’Lantern template
- 3 piping bags
- Cookie sheet
- Toothpick
And that’s it!
LET’S GET STARTED
The first thing you need to do is design your Jack O’Lantern ‘face.’ Make sure it’s sized so that it will fit on the pumpkin part of your pie without overlapping onto the crust. My pie was 8″ and after I subtracted the crust, I was left with a circular shape about 6″ in diameter.
Feel free to download my template here (jackolantern template) or make your own!
Cut out a circle of wax paper that matches the size of your template/surface of your pie.
Tape your wax paper down on top of your template.
Melt your black candy melts down in your microwave by zapping them for 30-second intervals and stirring between zaps until smooth and melted. Transfer them to a piping bag and snip off the very tip so you have a tiny nozzle.
Carefully outline your Jack O’Lantern design using your black candy melts.
Once your initial design is outlined, pop it in the freezer to firm up for about 2 minutes.
While it’s firming up, melt your orange candy melts and transfer those to a piping bag, again snipping off the tip to form a tiny nozzle.
Fill in the outline of your black candy melt on your template with the orange candy melt and again pop in the freezer to firm up.
Repeat the same process with your yellow candy melts. At this point, my template was getting heavy. To prevent the design from cracking, I transferred it to a cookie sheet. This also helped to keep the design perfectly flat.
You can blend your orange and yellow candy melt colors together by using your toothpick to swirl them while they’re still melted and soft.
Once you’ve finished filling in your template, pop the whole thing into the freezer to completely firm up…about 5 minutes.
While your chocolate is firming up, use your toothpick to score curved lines into the surface of your pie to mimic the natural lines in a pumpkin.
Carefully remove your candy melt template from the waxed paper and place each piece, face down, on your pumpkin pie (placing them face down ensures the surface that’s seen is smooth.
And that’s it! So easy it’s scary!
You can add to your pie by dolloping on a bit of green frosting at the top for leaves and vines and adding on a stem made from a tootsie roll like Koalipops did, or you can simply rely on the candy melt face like I did.
Either way, you’ve just turned a plain and boring store-bought pie into a Halloween masterpiece.
BONE APPETITE!
