It’s been an incredibly busy Halloween season, with lots of opportunities to do amazingly fun things with different media outlets. Earlier this week I shared my Michael Myers Halloween cake I made for Shudder.com and today I’m sharing my Salem Saberhagen quiche I made for Syfy.com inspired by The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina!
Now if you want the whole recipe, you’re gonna have to swing by Syfy.com and see it there in all it’s flaky, gooey, goat cheesy glory, but I thought I’d share some fun photos here as well!
The first thing I want to do when talking about Sabrina is pay proper respect to the original Melissa Joan Hart version. I grew up on that show and have seen every single episode multiple times. Yes, it’s bright and colorful and has a pretty high camp value, but more than anything, it was fun.
The new version, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is about as far from the original as you can get while still maintaining at least a nugget of the original idea (teenage witch growing up amongst mortals and coming of age with her magic.). Make no mistakes, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina more than lives up to its name…it’s spooky. I suggest watching it with at least one if not two familiars nearby (Lucifur is my go-to in these situations.)
Speaking of familiars, let’s talk a bit about Salem Saberhagen…Sabrina’s snarky, sour, supernatural sidekick feline.
Ugh, I love that cat. He was always my favorite part of the show, which is why when Syfy asked me to come up with an appropriate witchy treat, Salem was my instant inspiration.
This quiche is savory, smooth, and super cheesy with a tangy bite from the use of goat cheese…so yeah, it’s essentially the perfect edible version of Salem’s personality!
This recipe starts with sauteeing and then caramelizing sweet red onions…
We add in some fresh spinach and let it all wilt down…
The filling is made by combining roasted butternut squash (or pumpkin) with goat cheese and eggs…
And the whole thing gets smoothed out in a pie crust and baked in the oven for 30 minutes.
But what is a Saberhagen pie without some serious Salem style? For that, I turned to artist Kjersti Faret and this absolutely incredible image:
A little Photoshop razzle dazzle later and I had a template I used to cut out Salem’s head in pie dough.
A little black food coloring and some hints of green and gold and it was all coming together…
Now, like I said, the full recipe is on Syfy.com which means I’m gonna skip over the rest of the directions and just show you some absolutely gorgeous finished shots in the hopes that you’ll be so inspired to make this quiche for yourself that you’ll go visit Syfy.com! (hint, hint! It makes me look good to the bosses if my stuff gets lots of views…)
Mmm…absolutely spellbindingly puuuuurrrrffffeeeeeccccttt…

I also want to take this opportunity to mention pie artist Jessica Leigh Clark-Bojin who runs the site Pies are Awesome. She is truly a pie-oneer (you see what I did there?!) in the pie making world, and I used her videos and tutorials as a jumping off point for this creation. If you’ve got a pie in your near future (and it’s the season so I’m sure we ALL do) and you’re looking for a way to make it epic, check out her site!
Bone Appetite…and HAPPY HALLOWEEN!
I made this quiche this year for a dinner party I threw for my parents (COVID 🤷🏻 ugh) but it turned out amazing! It got rave reviews! Too bad I can’t add a picture, bc it looked and smelled delicious!
I’m so glad you all enjoyed it! I love making this one too – with or without Salem’s gorgeous mug on it!
