Spring is finally here! It’s felt like this winter would never end…ugh. All that slush and ice. Bleaugh. As a denizen of Hell, there is nothing I hate more than being cold, which is why I’m so excited that things are finally warming up around here.
Along with spring comes several auspicious holidays. There’s the bleeding heart holiday, something about death and taxes, and then the zombie holiday. You know the one I’m talking about. The one where the dead come back to life? Everybody loves a good zombie story!
Now my description of the holiday might not be the most accurate, but what I do know is, these chocolate zombunnies are so cute..and easy to make, it’s scary…and a perfect way to celebrate any zombie holiday.
The first thing you need is a good chocolate bunny mold. I got mine here. You can certainly decide to use a different mold if you want, but I liked the fact that this one had floppy ears which made putting the brain in much easier. It’s up to you which one you choose…just keep in mind ears and brains when it comes to your final design.
You’re also going to need a brain mold. I used a Wilton mold that I picked up last Halloween. I tried finding the same mold to link for you guys here but apparently, Wilton doesn’t have any for sale right now during the offseason. This one looks like it’s about the right size and should work as well.
BEFORE WE GET STARTED, I SHOULD LET YOU KNOW, **THIS POST CONTAINS AFFILIATE LINKS.

For this recipe you will need:
- 2 bags of lime green candy melts
- 1/4 cup pink candy melts
- 1/4 cup blue candy melts
- 1/4 cup yellow candy melts
- 1/4 cup red candy melts
- 1/4 cup chocolate candy melts
- 1/4 cup black candy melts
- 1/4 cup white candy melts
- 1 package candy eyeballs
You’re also going to need a small food safe paint brush (or several…depending on how much time you want to spend on cleaning it between colors.)
Side note #1: This recipe is specific to my bunny mold. He is holding a basket in his paws with three eggs in it…and between painting the basket brown and the eggs yellow, pink and blue, I needed the different colors. Depending on the mold you use, you may or may not need as many colors as I have listed.
Start by first melting your pink, blue, yellow and chocolate candy melts. This can easily be done in the microwave by zapping them in 15-second intervals, stirring between each zap until they’re melted and smooth.
For this recipe, I recycled one of my leftover chocolate skulls I had from another project, which is why, when I microwaved it, it ended up looking like this:
I just thought it looked funny, which is why I’m sharing it here.
Moving on…
Using your paint brushes, carefully add color to the detail spots of your mold. I first added the eggs in pink, yellow and blue, and then added in the brown of the basket.
I also painted my bunny’s nose pink and melted a few white blobs for my bunny’s tail.
Side note #2: Because this is chocolate we’re painting with and not actual paint, the term ‘painting’ is loosely used. To be honest, I just used the paintbrush to blop the melted chocolate where I wanted it. if you actually ‘paint,’ you run the risk of thinning and streaking the chocolate too much which means the color directly behind it will shine through.
Put both halves of your mold into the freezer for about 5 minutes to firm up.
While that’s firming up, it’s time to melt your green. I found for each bunny, I used about 1/2 a bag of the lime green…
Using the same technique as described above, melt your lime green candy melts. Once they’re smoothly melted, let them cool for about 5 minutes or so. We’re going to be layering on top of our painted chocolate bits and if you put a whole mess of straight-from-the-microwave hot green on top of your brown, pink, blue and yellow, the heat will melt them all and you’ll end up with a muddy smooshed blob.
Using a spoon, place a blob of cooled but still liquid green right on top of your basket and eggs. You’re going to want to create a small ‘puddle’ of melted green that completely covers your basket/eggs and is about 1/4 of an inch thick. We’re building up a protective layer of green on top of our basket so when we pour the rest of the hot candy melts into there, we don’t run the risk of melting what we don’t want to melt. Just plop your green right on top and then leave it alone. Don’t smooth it out, don’t rub it…just plop.
Once that’s done, put the whole mold into the fridge and wait for it to firm up.
After that’s complete, you should be able to pour the rest of your bunny mold without running the risk of accidentally melting anything you don’t mean to.
Fill both halves of your bunny mold with melted green candy melts, tilting the molds to ensure that the entire surface is full covered.
Turn your molds face up onto either waxed paper or a silicone baking mat and allow them to drain for about 10 minutes.
Once they’ve drained their excess chocolate, pop them into the fridge for another 5 minutes to firm up and then repeat the process again for an additional layer of green.
While your final layer of green is firming up, it’s time to make our brains.
Mix together about 1/4 of your cup of remaining green candy melts and add in 4 black candy melts and 2 red candy melts.
You should be left with a nice, pallid grey color.
Following the same method as above for your chocolate bunny, make each brain with two layers of grey.
When your brains and bunnies are firmed up, it’s time to assemble.
Heat a small frying pan on your stove over the lowest setting you can. Take both halves of your bunny and, one at a time, press the raw edges/back to the pan until it melts and smooths the edges. Line them up and press the melted edges/halves together to create one single piece.
Now turn your bunny upside down and press the top of his head to the pan. Go ahead…melt that bastard down until you’ve managed to shear off the top half of his noggin.
Now, while the green is still soft and melty, press one of your grey zombie brains on top, covering the hole.
You’ll probably have gaps on either side of the brain simply because the brain is a little smaller than the actual top of your bunny, but don’t worry… Slap on a little more melted green to seal those up and don’t worry about being pretty…this is a zombunny. The sloppier the better!
Using a spoon or a squeeze bottle (like these here), drizzle on a good layer of melted red candy melt blood. Again, use your imagination. These are bloody, gory zombunnies…
Let’s move onto our zombie brain cupcakes.
For this you’ll need:
- 1 box cupcake mix
- 1 can cupcake frosting
- 2 Tablespoons milk
- 1/4 cup green candy melts
- red candy melts
- black candy melts
- raspberry jam
- green sprinkles (optional)
Prepare your cupcakes according to the directions on the box. For these, I used a key lime mix. You can use any flavor you’d like. I’m not picky.
Take your frosting and microwave it for approximately 15 seconds.
Scoop it into a mixing bowl and using the whisk attachment, whip it up for a good 30 seconds. Scrape the sides of your bowl and whip it on high again for another 30 seconds, drizzling in your milk.
This aerates your frosting, making it not only easier to pipe onto your cupcakes, but also doubles your amount. Win win!
To make your zombie brain cupcake toppers, do the exact same thing you did with your bunny brains, but add in a scoop of raspberry jam after the first two layers have hardened. Pop them into the freezer for about 10 minutes to firm up the jam, then top with more grey candy melt, sealing it all in, creating a jam filled brain truffle. Yum!
Frost your cupcakes, add a sprinkle or two of green sprinkles for a little sparkle, press a brain on top, and then drizzle with a bit of melted red candy melt.
And that’s it! Your chocolate zombunny and zombie brain cupcakes are done!
Plate them up and show them off!
Happy Zombieday…and as always…
…bone appetite!

lol These are awesome. 😛 Love the zombie theme. Very appropriate for the holiday. 😉
AHAHAHAHA! So these are the epic Zombunnies!
I’m going to make one when I can.
(And pet it in its undeath)
Before you pet it in its undeath, take a pic and send it along…I’d love to see how it turns out!
🙂
When I go, I certainly shall!
