I’m a lazy bastard, so when I find a DIY like this that’s just so ridiculously simple and ends up with such a nice end result, I can’t help but get excited to share it with you all! Such is the case with this ridiculously easy Goth floating shelf project.
A few days ago I was crawling through my local thrift store and found a cheap lightweight photo frame with a nice pattern on it. The price was right in my budget for fun things to grab for future DIYs but at that moment, I had no idea what to do with it. Then fate intervened! A few aisles over I found a rustic looking wooden box and wouldn’t you know it…it was almost the exact same size as the cheap plastic frame.
I knew with just a tiny bit of paint and a minimal amount of work on my end, that I could easily turn these two decent but not fabulous items into one super cool final project: a floating goth shelf perfect for stashing all my dark little treasures.
Let’s get crafty!
The first thing I did was to embellish the frame using a resin skull I had left over from an earlier project. A little dollop of E6000 and about an hour later and it was ready to paint.
I removed the glass from my frame as well as the cheap cardboard backing and gave both the frame and the wooden box a nice coat of black spray paint.
Now all that was left to do was to assemble the final product. I mean, really…this project is so stupid easy.
Using more of my E6000 glue, I simply glued the frame to the outside edge of the box. I then attached a hanging hook on the back, let the whole thing sit for 6 hours to fully dry and that was it. Project done!
I mean, really…this project really does leave you with an awesome end product that not only looks great, but is useful as well!
The box is deep enough that it works as a shelf both on top as well as in the interior. I’m using it right now for a few of my silly little treasures, but it would work equally well in a bathroom holding makeup and odds and ends.
It also works perfectly as a little icon niche and looks just as stunning sitting on a table as it does on the wall.
This was so stinkin’ easy and turned out so damn well that I’m now on the hunt for even MORE small decorative frames and perfectly sized boxes. I could easily see these all over the house, helping me to stay organized and tidy.
