I’ve never been one for nostalgia, but even I have to admit I miss the dark ages…and a big part of the fun of that time was the black plague. Nothing beat running around in long dark robes wearing plague masks chanting “bring out your dead!”
Ahh…good times.
Of course, modern medicine has made it a whole lot harder to spread a good dose of disease these days, but it doesn’t mean we can’t raise a glass to my favorite Horseman of the Apocalypse, Pestilence.
Whenever I have him over, I whip up a batch of these Black Plague Punch Bombs and we sit around drinking and reminiscing about the old days and how things were so much simpler back then.
Feel free to raise a glass with us and make your own fizzing Black Plague Punch bombs!
For this recipe you’ll need:
- ½ Cup Instant Lemonade Mix (sweetened)
- ½ Tablespoon Citric Acid
- ¼ Tablespoon Baking Soda
- Purple food coloring
- Spray bottle of water
- Silicone mold of your choice (I used a bat one)
Mix together your lemonade mix and your citric acid until they are thoroughly blended.
Add in, a drop at a time, your food coloring. I’ve found it’s easiest to mix the food coloring into the dry powder by using my bare hands. Just make sure you wash and dry them completely before attempting this. Add in only enough food coloring to change the color of your powder…you don’t want to add in so much that it becomes damp.
Once you have a color you are happy with, add in your baking soda and mix completely.
Using your spray bottle, LIGHTLY spritz your mix while simultaneously kneading it in with your free hand. Make sure you knead well between each spray. You want the powder to become just damp enough to clump together like sand but not so wet that it triggers a chemical reaction.
Once your mix is damp enough to just barely clump together when you squeeze it, scoop it into your mold and pack it down as tightly as you possibly can. I’ve found using the back of a spoon to really smash it down works well.
Let your Black Plague Punch Bombs fully dry out for at least 24 hours.
Once they’re fully dry, gently pop them out of their molds and allow to dry for an additional 6 hours.
When you’re ready to dazzle your audience, simply pop one or two into a full glass of water (or your favorite clear adult beverage) and watch the plague drops boil themselves into a light, slightly carbonated and certainly show-stopping drink!
