Halloween Recipe: Dark Chocolate Penta-Graham Crackers

Happy Half-O-Ween my little dark hearted friends and familiars!  We’re officially halfway to Halloween!  To celebrate the halfway mark to our all-time favorite holiday, I’m sharing with you all a little treat I like to summon up, chocolate penta-graham crackers.

penta grahams all done

Made from a dark dose of cocoa, with just a touch of sweet, these light and crispy treats are a hybrid cross between cracker and cookie.  Feeling a little more savory?  Leave off the icing and serve them with a sliced apple or two.  Want a little more sweet?  Drizzle them with icing and watch them disappear like magic.

Sure, the sigils might say hell, but the taste is all heaven.

Bonus:  Each cookie is inscribed with a devil’s trap symbol…and while it won’t work on a demon of my status, it works great on the minor minions.  I love baking but I hate dishes which is why, whenever I’m feeling overwhelmed by the pile in my sink, I like to whip up these demon summoning penta-graham crackers and trap myself a good minor minion (or two) to clean up my mess.  (I keep hoping for a Winchester boy.  Hasn’t happened yet…I’ll keep you posted).

To make your own penta-graham crackers you will need:

  • 1 1/4 Cups flour
  • 1/2 Cup dark cocoa powder
  • 1 1/4 Cups powdered sugar
  • 1 Teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened but not liquid
  • 2 Tablespoons honey
  • 4 tablespoons cold milk

For the (optional) icing you will need:

  • 1 Tablespoon water
  • 4 Tablespoons powdered sugar

You will also need:

  • Parchment paper (not waxed)
  • A cookie sheet
  • Devil’s trap cookie cutter*
  • OR  Two circular cookie cutters (or two round drinking glasses) one larger than the other*
  • A butter knife
  • A rolling pin
  • A Ziplock bag or small-tipped pastry bag
  • toothpick

*Now if you’re lazy (like I am…) you can order your own pre-made devil’s trap cookie cutter.  I got mine here.  Of course, you can do this on your own without a cutter. I’ve included those directions here as well.

Start by pre-heating your oven to 325F/163C.

Mix together your flour, baking powder, sugar, cocoa, and butter.

In a separate bowl, whisk together your milk and honey until well blended and then pour over your first mixture.  You should end up with a thick, slightly sticky dough that holds together well when squeezed.

Sandwich your dough between two large pieces of parchment paper.

Using your rolling pin, roll out your dough until it’s roughly ¼” thick.

If you’re using a pre-made devil’s trap cookie cutter, just cut out your cookies and proceed to the baking part.

If you’re not using a pre-made devil’s trap cutter, here’s how you cut them out:

Take the larger of your two circular cookie cutters (or drinking glass if using that) and use it to cut out perfect circles in your dough.

Then, using the smaller circular cookie cutter (or drinking glass) press the edge into the center of your cut circles, making sure to press down the dough but NOT cut all the way through.

You want to create a ring-like appearance without actually cutting through the dough with the smaller glass.

Peel away the excess dough from around the edges of your cut dough circles.

Now, using the DULL SIDE of your butter knife, gently press a pentagram into your cookie dough, again making sure you go deep enough to leave an impression but not so deep as to cut through the graham all the way.

Using the toothpick and the guide below, draw on your symbols.

Place your newly scribed penta-grahms onto your baking sheet and pop into the oven for 12-15 minutes or until crispy.  The grahams will spread a bit as you cook so be sure to leave a little room between edges to prevent sticking.

Allow your grahams to cool on a wire rack.

At this point you could call these cookies done.  They have a deep chocolate flavor that is slightly bitter…which makes them perfect for dipping into coffee or haunted hot chocolate (recipe coming soon).

HOWEVER, if you’d like to add a bit more sweetness to them, I suggest icing them.

To make the optional icing:

Drizzle the water over your powdered sugar and mix well.  Transfer to your pastry bag (or Ziplock bag with a corner cut off) and use to ice your grahams.

Please note these cookies are meant only to banish hunger and not meant to actually call forth any demons unless you plan on making them do menial tasks around your kitchen as described at the top of this post.  In that case, I would suggest surrounding the plate at all times with a circle of unbroken salt before doing any summoning ceremonies…just in case.

*No virgins were harmed in the making of this recipe.

Bone appetite!

These are so cool. That being said you had me worried for a second. I thought you had sacrificed at least a dozen virgins to make them look so decadent ?

Ugh. Sacrificing virgins these days is such a chore. Not only are they increasingly hard to find, the paperwork involved is just ridiculous. Hell is very bureaucratic…everything has to be done in triplicate and approved by multiple supervisors. I tend to save the sacrifices for big events and skip them for little things like this. 🙂
